HandCarved by: Hopi Artist, Randy Brokeshoulder

The Hopi Broadface Guard Katsina is also known as the Whipper Katsina.  He played an important role as a guard carrying a whip, with his scary bulging eyes and long tongue, the Hopi clowns were very fearful of him.  Randy Brokeshoulder used cottonwood to carve the figure painting him with natural paint and colors.  The corn husks, horse hair, and raw hide were added for special features such as the hair and beard.  The corn husks most likley represent that this Katsina is also looked to for good harvest.   The Broadface Guard is often hung above a doorway to prevent evil spirits from coming in.

The Katsina is known as a wall doll to many collectors. The rope/yarn that is attached to the back of the doll were the Katsina hangs on the walls of the hogan.
