Old Traditional Navajo Wedding Basket
12 1/4” Diameter
Basket was bought at the Nugget Gallery from a Navajo family from the New Mexico Reservation. The baskets are from their personal collection that they have been saving for many years. The Nugget Gallery buys many old collectables from the Native Americans and traders.
The Wedding Basket reflects the many values in the Traditional Navajo Life. The basket often contains six points which are the six sacred mountains. The Navajo wedding basket is traditionally white, black and red and has many symbolic meanings.
The center of the basket which is white represents the beginning of life where the Navajo emerges from the reed. The black symbolizes life, struggle, hardship, boundaries, and also known as the peaks to where the water bowls are found. The Red represents the blood of the family, your spouse, and children. Red is “pure.” Black follows after the red which is life again struggle, clouds, rain, but always followed by a white band of enlightenment. The white band is endless eternity of enlightenment. The wedding basket must always have a pathway from the center out allowing the spirit to leave the basket. The wedding basket has a braided brim which is different from all other Navajo baskets.
